I think African football is becoming something else as compared to one of the highly prestigious competitions held while i was a kid. Maybe the organizers are now too old in office so much so that, instead of presenting a great deal of experience as per longevity of service, they are rather presenting a derailed functional ability to organized a 21st century soccer competition. I really wonder if this is an international competition again or one of the inter quarter soccer games they organized during summers in the city of Bamenda Cameroon, where I am coming from. The whole competition is just a sham and full of controversies.
some of which popped up during the quarter-final game last weekend between the host country Equatorial Guinea and Tunisia. The host country made it through to the semi-final after beating Tunisia by 2 goals to 1 with a controversial penalty. Corruption allegations also came up, pinpointing the organizers for match fixing. Banning a match official for 6 months isn't good enough compared to the magnitude of what he did. He deserve the end of his career as a match official.
Yesterday was another messed still involving the host country acting cowardly in contrary with the laws of the game. The home supports interrupted the semi-final game by riots couple of times. This is too bad for a competition of such magnitude.
I suggest a lot need to be done starting from the organizers right down to the level of the competition in order to gain back the prestigious nature of this competition.
you are right at that point guy. The fact is players of today don't play for honor anymore they play for money so they have to compete to win and get much money.
ReplyDeleteAfrican football has got a long way to go and the Confederation of African Union organizers have more room for improvement. This has been happening for a long time all over the African continent. Every country that host a tournament feels they are entitled to win the cup and they don't want to accept defeat. Good article.
